Dr. Thamina Anwar

Dr. Thamina Anwar is a highly motivated individual. She is the founder of Trade Not Riba dot Com (tradenotriba.com). She is a writer, researcher, educator, engineer, social entrepreneur and consultant for various international educational institutions, governments, corporate/non-profit organisations and waqf (endowment) institutions.

Thamina is the author of “Waqf (Endowment): A Vehicle for Islamic Social Entrepreneurship”, published in 2017 by IBFIM (Islamic Banking and Finance Institute Malaysia), Kuala Lumpur. She is also one of the authors of the “Financing the Development of Old WAQF Properties: Classical Principles and Innovative Practices Around the World”, published by Palgrave Studies in Islamic Banking, Finance and Economics, USA. She has written academic papers and has presented her ideas at numerous international academic conferences around the globe.

Thamina’s work experience spans across the UK, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia and Middle East. She has over 15 years of experience in varied positions and sectors ranging from research, lecturing, education management, problem solving, business analysis, general management, business development, product (software) development, business start-up strategies, relationship building, project management, consultancy, IT, computer programming, Islamic finance, Islamic social entrepreneurship, sustainability, engineering, waqf (endowment) investment/management strategies and philanthropy (community empowerment).

She has a lifelong passion for knowledge and learning which is backed by a track record of academic achievements, in varied sectors. Thamina has a Doctorate degree from UKZN (SA) which she completed under the supervision of Professor Dr. Suleman Dangor and Associate Professor Dr. Adi Setia. Dr. Adi Setia is well- known for his “hash and no nonsense” attitude towards his PhD students and is well respected in the Islamic economy sector for being the founder of Islamic Gift Economy and author of numerous books/academic articles on the topic.

In addition, Thamina has a Masters in Islamic Finance and is a Chartered Islamic Finance Professional (CIFP), gained from INCEIF, The Global University of Islamic Finance (Malaysia). She has an MBA from Europe’s best business school, Cranfield School of Management, Cranfield University (UK) where she specialised in Entrepreneurship and Strategy. Her engineering / technical qualification gave a head-start in problem-solving and enabled her with good analytical skills which she says helps her to “think outside the box”. She has a Master of Science (MSc) in Communications & Real-time Electronics from the University of Bradford (UK) and a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons.) in Electronic Engineering from Queen Mary, University of London (UK). She also has a Post-graduate Diploma in Teaching from the University of Auckland (NZ), which gave her the knowledge on how to structure curriculums and practice good teaching methodologies.

Thamina is a confident “people person” and has natural ability to engage at different levels and builds relationships with people and organisations, thus adding significant values through excellent management, organisational and strong communication capabilities. She is a multi-lingual: speaks and writes fluent English and Bahasa Melayu (Brunei Malay). She can speak and understand oral Bengali (Bangla) and limited Hindi/Urdu. She is learning Arabic (classical) and Maori (indigenous language of New Zealand).

Her home country is down under, Aotearoa (land of the long white cloud) which is the Maori name for New Zealand. Thamina leads a very active life-style. She is fun loving and enjoys quality time with her children. She paints Islamic calligraphy and fine art using acrylic paints. She enjoys going hiking, exploring beautiful beaches/landscapes, travelling around the world, experiencing different cultures, exploring creativity, creating hand/needle crafts & beaded jewellery, playing with electronic gadgets/software, gardening, cooking for her family and close friends, healthy eating/living, keeping fit, discussing current affairs and various Islamic topics, Islamic da’wah (Islamic invitation) work, helping new Muslims learn/understand Islam, etc.

She has the Kiwi “can do” attitude and tries many things in life. As a goal-setter she focusses on what needs to be achieved in order to get the job done. She has a bucket-list of things she wants to achieve and looks forward towards crossing them off one by one before she returns back to her creator – Allah (SWT).

Thamina aspires to leverage all her knowledge, skills, qualification, experience to connect the dots and solve challenges for the Muslim ummah (community) and the wider community (non-Muslim community) to make this dunia (world) a better place for all (both Muslims and non-Muslims), especially in the field of Islamic Social Entrepreneurship and Social Entrepreneurship. She is always in the hunt for new challenges and opportunities.
